Motorcycles Driver’s Licences

You’ve come to the right place if you’re eager to hit the open road on a motorcycle, scooter, moped, or motor tricycle. At Book Driving Test, we help book your Class M licence and guide you through the graduated licensing program.

What is a Class M License?

A Class M licence is your gateway to motorcycle riding. This licence enables you to operate motorcycles, limited-speed motorcycles (motor scooters), and motor-assisted bicycles (mopeds). In Ontario, the Class M licence is part of a graduated licensing system, providing new riders with the skills and experience they need to ride safely.

Types of Class M License

Class M1 – Level 1

This is the first step in the graduated licensing program for motorcycles. It includes limited-speed motorcycles (motor scooters) and motor-assisted bicycles (mopeds). Riders with a Class M1 licence must adhere to certain restrictions.

Class M2 – Level 2

The Class M2 licence is the next level in the graduated licensing program. It also includes limited-speed motorcycles (motor scooters) and motor-assisted bicycles (mopeds). A Class M2 licence holder may also drive a Class G vehicle under specific conditions, similar to a Class G1 licence holder.

Class M, M1, or M2 with Condition L (LSM/moped)

This condition applies to limited-speed motorcycles (LSM) or mopeds only. Limited-speed motorbikes have a maximum speed of 70 km/hr. They are typically identified by a label on the vehicle, indicating it’s an “LSM/MVL.”

Class M, M1, or M2 with Condition 1 (Motor Tricycle)

This condition is for motor tricycles, which are three-wheeled motorcycles. Motor tricycles have unique features like straddled seating, handlebar steering, and specific weight limits. Some three-wheeled vehicles may be considered two-wheeled open motorcycles by Transport Canada. Completing a road test with one of these vehicles can result in a full M-class driver’s licence.

Special Considerations for Existing License Holders

If you currently hold a full class A, B, C, D, E, F, or G driver’s licence and complete an approved accelerated three-wheeled motorcycle safety course, you can upgrade to a Class M(M) licence. The advantages of this upgrade include:
  • You can upgrade without waiting periods.
  • You are not required to complete these tests at any Drive Test Centre.

Class M New Drivers Requirements

A Class M licence applicant must;
  • Be at least 16 years old during application.
  • Meet the Ministry of Transportation’s (MTO) vision.
  • Pass traffic signs knowledge test of motorcycles and the road rules.
  • Pass the M2 and M road test to become fully licensed.

Obtaining a Class M1, Class M2, and Class M License

Class M graduated licensing differs from Class G. Even experienced drivers with a full Ontario Class G licence must complete all Class M graduated licensing steps, taking around 20 months for most. Newcomers to Ontario need to apply for an Ontario licence within 60 days. Motorcycle licence holders from certain jurisdictions may exchange for a full Ontario licence. Obtaining a Class M licence, including graduated licensing steps, may not apply if you take a motorcycle course.
