Vision Tests

At Book Driving Test, we are committed to ensuring the safety of all road users in Ontario. As a part of the driver’s licence application process, you must meet specific visual requirements to ensure you can safely navigate our roads. Let’s discuss the vision tests required for booking your driving test.

Vision Tests for New Driver’s License

We understand that your time is valuable. That’s why we have designed an easy booking for vision tests that will be quick and convenient. Here is what you can expect during the vision test process:
  • Each vision test is a brief procedure typically taking only a few minutes to complete.
  • Our knowledgeable customer representatives are here to assist you at every step of the booking process. They will administer the test date and provide any necessary guidance
The vision test for new driver’s licence includes:
  • You will have to stare at the vision screen and read the written letters, which are designed to assess your visual acuity accurately.
  • During the test, you will read aloud a series of letters or numbers. These characters gradually decrease in size, allowing the medical assistant to determine your ability to recognize details at different distances.
  • As part of the test, you will be asked to indicate when a flashing light appears and specify on which side the light appears. This evaluates your peripheral vision and awareness of important road signals.
  • Vision tests are conducted at drive test centres, ensuring an efficient testing process.

Eye-Sight Lenses And Glasses

If you need glasses or contact lenses for driving, an X condition will be added to your driver’s licence photo card. Remember the following:
  • Bring your glasses or eye-sight lenses on your vision test day.
  • It is essential to keep your licence updated as your eyes change over time.

Adding the X Condition

  • If you start wearing glasses or eye-sight lenses while driving, visit the government test centre.
  • No vision test is needed to add the X condition.

Removing the X Condition

  • To remove the X condition, again visit a government test centre and either book your test date with a Book Driving Test and complete a vision test or submit a vision form from your eye specialist.
  • The vision form should have complete eye readings and horizontal visual field results.
  • Vision results are valid for six months.

No Charges Apply

There is no fee for adding or removing the X condition. Keep your licence accurate and ensure safe driving.

Requirements For Vision Tests

The vision testing standards for different licence classes are as follows:

Classes G1, M1, G2, M2, M2(L), G, M, M(L), and Driving Instructor Licences

  • Visual sight must be at most 20/50 with both eyes open and examined together, with or without corrective lenses.
  • A minimum of 120 degrees horizontal visual field of peripheral vision reading is required.

Following The Vision Tests

You will be given a form to visit and attend a session with your eye specialist in case of an unsuccessful vision test because of the given requirements. Once you have completed the requirement form, you can return it to any test centre and proceed with your application or renewal.
Renewal of a Class A, B, C, D, E, or F licence for commercial drivers: an unsuccessful vision test will result in a downgrade to a Class G licence. However, after consulting with a vision specialist and submitting the requirements form, commercial drivers will have the opportunity to regain their commercial licence.
