Driving Instructor Licence

Driving Instructor Requirements

To teach students working towards a Class G driver’s licence in Ontario, you need to:
  • Have a valid Ontario driver’s licence, except for class G1, G2, M1, M2, or M(L).
  • Be 18 years old or older.
  • Maintain a clean driving record with no demerit points.
  • Pass a final check at the DriveTest Centre to ensure you meet licensing criteria.
  • Meet the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) vision requirements.
  • Pass the G1 knowledge test (with a one-year waiting period after two unsuccessful attempts).
  • Pass a Class G road (highway) test (with a one-year waiting period after two unsuccessful attempts).
  • Complete a Criminal Record and Judicial Matters (CRJM) Check or an equivalent background check.
  • Finish an MTO-approved driving instructor’s training course.

Obtain Driving Instructor’s License

Whether you’re starting your journey to become a driving instructor or already have your full instructor’s licence, there are some essential steps you will need to follow:

Time Limit

When you apply for your driving instructor’s licence, you have one year to meet all the requirements. If you can’t complete the process within this year, you will need to pay all the fees again.

Knowledge Test

To become a Class G driving instructor, you must be well-versed in the Official MTO Driver’s Handbook and the Highway Traffic Act.

Contact Book Driving Test

Contact Book Driving Test to provide you with the test date. Visit the test centre to get the driving instructor paperwork and apply for your licence. When applying, you must also have a valid Ontario driver’s licence (except for Class G1, G2, M1, M2, or M(L)).

Pay Application Fee

You will need to pay a non-refundable application fee at the Test Centre. Remember that there will be an additional driving instructor licensing fee once your temporary licence is issued, and you will have to renew your instructor’s licence every three years.

Take a Vision Test

During the test, you will need to take a quick vision test. Make sure to bring any corrective lenses you use.

Pass the G1 Knowledge Test

You’ll need to complete the G1 knowledge test, which usually takes about 30 minutes. No appointment is required for this test.

Take the Class G Road Test

You must also book and complete the Class G road (highway). This is the same test your students will take.

Criminal Record Check

As part of the process, you must obtain a Criminal Record and Judicial Matters (CRJM) Check. You can do this through your local police service or an authorised criminal record check provider.

Complete an MTO-Approved Driving Instructor Course

Once you’ve passed the required tests and cleared the checks, you will need to complete an MTO-approved driving instructor course, which various colleges, associations, and private companies offer.

Get Your Temporary Licence

The Instructor Licensing Fee is calculated automatically. You will receive a temporary driving instructor’s licence, which is valid for 90 days. After this, You are ready to help new drivers become safe and responsible on Ontario’s roads.
